Are Sex Dolls Legal? What the Law Says in the US and Canada
On this page
Are sex dolls legal? A doll of a grown woman is legal to own in Canada, and neither Florida’s doll law nor Alabama’s sex-toy law makes owning one a crime. What’s a crime is a doll that looks like a child. Canada treats those as child sexual abuse material, and Florida made them a crime in 2019.
Material, weight and price don’t come into it. What the law looks at is what she looks like. Everything below is as of October 2026, and I’m an electrician, not a lawyer. Anything specific to you goes to a real one.
A guy I know asked me at a barbecue whether he needs a permit to own a doll. He doesn’t, but he does need a better grill.
Are sex dolls legal in the US and Canada?
Yes for adult dolls, in the laws below. No for childlike dolls in Canada and Florida, and that’s a criminal charge, not a customs fine.
| Where | Adult doll | Childlike doll | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | Legal. Taxed at the border like any import | Crime: child sexual abuse material | Criminal Code s.163.1 |
| Florida | Not covered by the doll law | Crime to own, and a felony to sell | Florida Statutes s.847.011(5) |
| Alabama | Owning isn’t the crime. Selling sex devices is | Not covered here. Read Alabama’s code | Alabama Code s.13A-12-200.2 |
| Other US states | Check your own state’s statute | Laws vary and sources disagree. Read yours | Your state legislature’s site |

The looks-like rule
The looks-like rule: the law judges a doll by what it looks like, not by what the listing says about it. A height cutoff won’t save you, and neither will an age printed on the box.
Florida’s doll law uses the words “child-like sex doll” and never defines them. The definitions section of Florida’s obscenity chapter doesn’t mention dolls at all. There’s no measurement in the statute to hide behind.
Canada works the same way. CBC reported that border officers seized at least 42 child-like dolls between January 2016 and August 2018, and treated them as child pornography because of how they looked.
That’s why my own line is simple. Clearly adult face, clearly adult body, or I skip it. If I’d have to squint, it’s out.
Are sex dolls illegal in Florida?
Adult sex dolls aren’t illegal in Florida. An “obscene, child-like sex doll” is. The rule sits in section 847.011(5) of the Florida Statutes, and it’s been law since the 2019 bill (Chapter 2019-45) took effect on October 1, 2019.
Here’s what the 2025 text says:
| What you do | First offence | Second offence |
|---|---|---|
| Own or keep one | First-degree misdemeanour | Third-degree felony |
| Sell, lend, give away, distribute, show or advertise one, or hold one to do that | Third-degree felony | Second-degree felony |
Under Florida’s sentencing law, a first-degree misdemeanour carries up to 1 year. A third-degree felony carries up to 5.
Two more lines in that section matter. A cop can arrest without a warrant on probable cause for possession, and a judge can sign a search warrant for a private home to look for one.
So if you’re in Florida and buying a doll of a grown woman, the doll law isn’t about you. It’s about the stuff this site never links to.
Are sex dolls legal in the rest of the US?
For adult dolls, the only US law on this page that touches them is about selling, not owning. I didn’t find a federal law that bans adult dolls, and I’m not going to guess at one. Your state’s own statute is the thing to read, not a forum post.
Alabama: the store’s problem, mostly
Alabama is the odd one. Its code makes it a crime to sell “any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs” for money. The penalty is a fine of up to $10,000 and up to a year in county jail.
That section goes after the seller. Possession only counts when you mean to distribute. The FindLaw copy is marked current as of December 30, 2024, so check the state’s own site for anything newer.
If you’re in Alabama, ask the store whether it ships to you before you hit buy. Some won’t, and that’s their call.
Every other state
Other states have passed or debated laws on childlike dolls, but the sources disagree on which ones, so I’m not listing them. A wrong list is worse than no list, and plenty of the lists floating around are crap.
Read your state’s law the way I read Florida’s. Find what it covers, then ask whether the doll you want is anywhere near it. For a doll of a grown woman from a clean store, it won’t be.
Are sex dolls legal in Canada?
Yes, an adult sex doll is legal in Canada. A doll that looks like a child is not, and it’s treated as child sexual abuse material. Those offences sit in section 163.1 of the Criminal Code, which covers any “visual representation” of a person who “is or is depicted as being under the age of eighteen years”.
The maximums are no joke. Possession carries up to 10 years. Importing or distributing carries up to 14. That’s the Criminal Code as posted, current to September 21, 2026.
And it gets enforced. In October 2024, border officers in Hamilton, my own city, found a child sex doll in a courier shipment from Japan headed to Nova Scotia. The man who ordered it was charged with possession, importation and smuggling of child pornography.
An adult doll just gets taxed at the border like any other big parcel. The Canadian customs rules for sex dolls come down to where the box ships from.
Buying one, by where you live
For an adult doll, the legal part is easy. The paperwork is where guys get caught out.
- In Canada: As of October 2026, CBSA’s courier rules let a courier box from the US or Mexico in tax-free only up to C$40, and one from anywhere else only up to C$20. Almost any doll costs more, so expect GST or HST. Duty is a separate question, covered in the customs guide linked above.
- In the US, ordering from overseas: The $800 duty-free pass has been suspended for all countries since August 29, 2025. Whoever imports the box pays. My US sex doll tariff breakdown explains why DDP shipping (the seller pays the duty and clears customs) matters.
- In Florida: Buy a doll of a grown woman from a store that doesn’t sell childlike dolls at all. Then the doll law has nothing to do with you.
- In Alabama: Check that the store ships to you, and read your state’s code yourself.
- Anywhere: If the box showing up worries you more than the law does, here’s how plain, unmarked doll shipping actually works.
The mistake most guys make: trusting the 18+ label
The mistake is thinking “18+” on a listing makes a doll legal. It doesn’t. Under the looks-like rule, a label is just words, and the doll is what gets judged.
Some listings print “18+” on a doll with a kid’s face and a kid’s body, like the label fixes it. That’s bullshit. Florida’s law and Canada’s Criminal Code both look at the doll, not the sticker.
You won’t find those dolls on this site, and I’ll never send you to that corner of a store. Dolls made to look like they’re under age are not cool, at all. My About page has the rest of where I stand.
Petite is a different thing. A grown woman who’s 4’11” is a grown woman. My petite doll picks all have adult faces and adult bodies, and anything borderline got cut.
FAQs
Is it illegal to buy a sex doll?
Not a doll of a grown woman, in Canada, Florida or Alabama. In Alabama, it’s the seller who risks a fine of up to $10,000. Buying a childlike doll is the crime, and in Florida a second possession charge turns it from a misdemeanour into a felony. For your own state, read its statute or ask a lawyer before you order anything you’re unsure about.
Can a US man be arrested for a sex doll?
Yes, for a childlike doll in a state that bans them. Florida is the clear example. Police there can arrest on probable cause without a warrant, and a judge can issue a search warrant for a home. Selling or giving one away is a felony from the first offence. Nothing in that law covers a doll of a grown woman.
Is it legal to buy a petite sex doll?
A petite doll with a clearly adult face and body is a short adult woman, and no law on this page bans that. What gets dolls seized is looking like a child. In CBC’s report, the officers’ reasons were small stature and underdeveloped breasts. So I would avoid any short doll whose face or body reads childlike. If you have to wonder, don’t buy it.
Check the store’s shipping page before you hit buy, and keep the receipt. That’s all the paperwork a legal doll needs.
Cheers, Craig
