The straight TPE vs silicone sex doll answer: buy TPE unless you know you’ll keep the doll two to three years. Starpery sells the same 5’6” body with a TPE body for $1,890 or in full silicone for $2,490 at RealSexDoll, as of October 2026. That silicone version only costs less per month if it lasts past 24 months.
Compare a cheap TPE doll with a silicone doll from another brand and the bar rises to 38 months. The math behind both numbers is what I call the break-even rule, and it’s further down.
Heads up, I make a few bucks if you buy through my links. Doesn’t change what I tell you, and I’ll tell you to skip stuff all day.
TPE vs silicone sex doll: the short version
TPE, a soft rubbery plastic, is cheaper, softer and porous, and it sweats oil. Silicone is non-porous and costs more, from about a third more on the same body to double on a budget doll. The fairest test is one body sold in both skins, so that’s the anchor.
| Starpery 5’6” (168 cm) H-cup body, Oct 2026 | TPE body + silicone head | Full silicone |
|---|---|---|
| Price at RealSexDoll | $1,890 | $2,490 (the same listing, +$600) |
| Price at Starpery’s own store | $2,300 | $2,900 |
| Listed body weight | 119 lb (54 kg) | 97 lb (44 kg) |
| Porous? | Yes | No |
| Can it be sanitized? | No, only cleaned | Yes, as a material |
| Maker lifespan claims | 6-18 months (Tantaly, for TPE) | “Many years” (Zelex) |
Neither listing offers this body with a TPE head. Both versions get the same silicone head, so the only thing that changes is the skin on the body. Both stores show the same $600 gap. Starpery’s own store says “Tax included. Shipping free.” on both versions.
The budget pair is the other end. At RealSexDoll, a 5’3” (160 cm) full TPE doll from AiBei is $999, US stock, and a full silicone doll from Climax is $2,100, as of October 2026. That’s two brands and two builds, a curvy TPE doll against a B-cup silicone one. So that gap measures brand and build as much as skin. Still, it’s the choice most guys on a budget actually face.

Are TPE and silicone even the same kind of material?
No. TPE is a plastic that softens with heat, and silicone is a rubber that doesn’t melt. That one difference explains most of the rest.
TPE means thermoplastic elastomer. Xometry, a manufacturing company, says TPE can be heated and reprocessed, and silicone can’t, and that silicone has no melting point. That’s written about industrial grades, not doll skin, but the lesson carries over: keep TPE away from heat.
Soft TPE also has oil mixed in. Incure, an adhesives company, says the extender oil in TPE isn’t chemically bonded to the polymer and migrates to the surface, where it forms “a thin, slippery film”. Heat speeds it up. The trade calls it blooming.
Zelex, a silicone doll maker, calls silicone “the most resistant material” and says a silicone doll “won’t be dyed”. It calls TPE soft, elastic and cheaper. That’s a maker selling its own material, so read it as a sales claim.
Who a TPE sex doll is for
A TPE sex doll is for the guy who wants a full-size body for around $1,000 and will clean it carefully. For a first doll, that’s the sensible place to start.
TPE is porous. Healthline lists thermoplastic elastomer among the porous sex toy materials, which means tiny holes that can hold bacteria even after washing. Bedsider, run by a sexual health nonprofit, says porous materials like TPE can only be cleaned, not sanitized.
That matters most if anyone else ever uses it. A small 2014 study had women use one TPE and one silicone vibrator, then clean them. Right after cleaning, HPV DNA was on 5 of 9 TPE shafts and 4 of 9 silicone shafts. After 24 hours, it was still on 2 of 5 TPE shafts and none of the silicone ones. It’s a small study, and it found HPV DNA, not proven infections. Health questions go to your doctor, and my page on whether TPE is safe goes deeper.
TPE tears and dents more easily, and fixing them is its own job. The TPE doll repair guide covers it.
My picks, with weights and shipping, are on the TPE sex doll page.
Who a silicone sex doll is for
A silicone sex doll is for the guy who already knows he’s into dolls, has $2,100 to $2,500 and plans to keep one for years. You’re paying for a skin that can be properly sanitized.
Silicone isn’t a free pass, though. A sex toy guide from Ontario’s Simcoe Muskoka health unit says silicone has a non-porous surface where bacteria and viruses don’t get trapped. The same guide warns that nicks and cuts in silicone can trap them, and says never to use silicone lube on silicone toys. So a silicone doll needs a non-silicone lube.
Looks are where silicone pulls ahead, but by less than you’d think. Starpery’s own FAQ, on the full silicone listing in the table, says body painting on TPE dolls isn’t permanent because of the material. Implanted hair isn’t silicone-only anymore, though. WM, a TPE doll maker, offers implanted hair on its TPE heads as a listing option.
At the top end, RealDoll’s Classic line lists at $5,999.99 as of October 2026. You don’t need to go near that. The silicone dolls in the table cost a third to under half of it.
My silicone picks, and the one I’d skip, are on the silicone sex doll page.
Hybrid, S-TPE and SLE: the in-between options
A hybrid sex doll is a TPE body with a silicone head, and it’s the cheapest way to get a silicone face. The TPE version of the Starpery body in the table is a hybrid, $1,890 at RealSexDoll as of October 2026. The body is still TPE, so it cleans and blooms like TPE.
S-TPE is a newer TPE blend that makers sell as less oily. Climax Doll’s silicone listings say its STPE uses “a new formula to significantly reduce oil leakage”. The listing publishes no test data and doesn’t say what the S stands for. Until owners report back after a year, an S-TPE upcharge buys you one sentence of listing copy, and listing copy is cheap as hell.
SLE is Zelex’s own soft silicone line. The Zelex FAQ says its products are made of “platinum silicone and high quality SLE materials”, and its doll guide says every SLE head is a soft head with an opening mouth. Shop it as premium silicone.
TPE vs silicone sex doll cost: the break-even rule
Silicone pays off only if it outlasts TPE by the price gap: 18 months times the silicone price divided by the TPE price. On the same Starpery body, that’s 24 months. On the budget pair, it’s 38. This is where the TPE vs silicone sex doll question gets settled, and I’m giving TPE the best maker lifespan claim I found.
Tantaly says that with proper care, TPE sex dolls typically last 6-18 months. Zelex’s doll guide says a silicone doll “can last for many years with proper care”, but gives no number. Here’s the math for all three price pairs:
| Pair (Oct 2026) | TPE cost per month, if it lasts 18 months | Silicone must last (TPE lasts 18 months) | Silicone must last (TPE lasts 6 months) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same Starpery body, RealSexDoll ($1,890 vs $2,490) | $105.00 | 24 months | 8 months |
| Same Starpery body, Starpery direct ($2,300 vs $2,900) | $127.78 | 23 months | 8 months |
| Budget pair, two brands ($999 vs $2,100) | $55.50 | 38 months | 13 months |
So the rule is two to three years, depending on how cheap your TPE option is. These are maker claims, not lab tests, and the math assumes you’d replace a worn-out TPE doll at the same price. If your TPE doll beats 18 months, the rule tilts further toward TPE.
Run it on any pair you’re looking at. Divide the silicone price by the TPE price and multiply by 18. That’s how many months the silicone doll has to last to be the cheaper buy.
Three years is a long time. The Leafs have broken my heart three times in less.
What owners say each skin does, from one Tantaly subreddit thread
Owners who’ve had both say TPE feels softer but stretches and tears, while silicone holds its shape. One found his silicone doll too tight, and others blamed the model. That’s from a March 2026 thread on Tantaly’s own subreddit, which I read in October 2026. A handful of owners on one brand’s fan board, so treat it as owner chatter, not a test. They don’t agree on which skin is better.
The stretch is the big one. One owner (u/Ill_Rooster4806), who has owned both:
“What I can tell is overtime TPE stretches out over time and does not go back.”
That owner says the openings on an older TPE doll were stretched past using after a year at 4-5 times a week. That’s about 12 months of heavy use, inside the 6-18 months makers quote, and it’s why the TPE side of the math assumes a replacement.
Another owner (u/Ras370SK), with two TPE dolls and one silicone, calls silicone superior in every way for him:
“Tpe is too soft and easy to tear just by using it.”
The other side came from the guy who started the thread (u/pailxgoon). His new silicone doll’s opening was too tight to use comfortably, and he wrote “out of the box I much prefer TPE holes”. Two commenters put that down to the model, not the material. On feel, a third owner (u/In62) prefers Tantaly’s TPE, though he grants silicone wins on cleaning and long-term durability:
“I find the feeling of Tantaly tpe to be better and more realistic than the silicone dolls I’ve tried.”
How to use that before you buy:
- Going TPE? Budget for a replacement at the 18-month mark, and don’t count on the openings staying snug.
- Going silicone, and you’re on the bigger side? Owners split. One says bigger guys will rip the openings, and another on the bigger side had no problem. Email the maker for the opening sizes before you pay.
What fits a small apartment
Skin type doesn’t decide the weight, so don’t pick silicone or TPE for the carrying. The silicone version is lighter in both pairs, but the reasons aren’t the skin.
On the Starpery body, the RealSexDoll listing gives 97 lb (44 kg) for silicone and 119 lb (54 kg) for TPE. It also lists a newer weight-reduction build on the silicone version (W.R. 4.2) than on the TPE one (W.R. 3.0). In the budget pair, the 5’3” silicone doll lists 75 lb (34 kg) and the TPE doll 86 lb (39 kg), with different makers and body shapes. Skeleton and core matter more than the skin.
All four are well over 51 lb (23 kg), which is about the heaviest thing most people should carry solo, even when it’s easy to grip. Storage is the same story. The budget TPE doll’s listing gives a package size of 148 x 38 x 28 cm (58 x 15 x 11 in). The Starpery body ships in 163 x 43 x 35 cm (64 x 17 x 14 in). Plan a closet or under-bed spot about that long. My guide to doll weights by type has the numbers by height. In a small place, a torso solves more problems than either skin does.
Get TPE if, get silicone if
Get a TPE sex doll if:
- your budget stops around $1,000 with shipping
- it’s your first doll and you’re not sure you’ll keep at it
- nobody else will ever use it
- you’re fine wiping off oil as part of the routine
Get a silicone sex doll if:
- you’ve owned a doll before and you’ll keep this one two to three years or more
- you want body paint that lasts
- you want a skin that can be properly sanitized
- you can spend $2,100 to $2,500 without it hurting
Get a hybrid if you want the silicone face without paying full-silicone money. On the Starpery body, that saves $600.
The mistake most guys make
Buying silicone as the first doll because it’s “the good one”. The break-even rule only works if you’re still using the doll in year two or three. Nobody knows that before doll number one shows up.
Buy silicone first, find out dolls aren’t for you, and you’re out $2,100 instead of $999. That’s a damn expensive way to learn something a TPE doll would have told you for half the price.
The runner-up mistake is thinking silicone means less cleaning. It still gets washed after every use, and you still check it for nicks. My doll cleaning guide walks through both skins step by step.
Craig’s final take
Spend the silicone money only once you’ve proven the habit. Until then, it’s a $600 to $1,100 upgrade on a hobby you haven’t tested.
FAQs
Is TPE or silicone better for sex dolls?
TPE is better for most first-time buyers, because it’s cheaper. On one Starpery body at RealSexDoll, the TPE-body version is $1,890 and full silicone is $2,490, as of October 2026. Silicone is better on hygiene, because it’s non-porous and can be sanitized. If you’ll keep the doll two to three years or more, silicone can work out cheaper per month.
Do silicone dolls last longer than TPE sex dolls?
Going by the makers, yes, but nobody I found publishes test data. Tantaly says TPE dolls typically last 6-18 months with proper care. Zelex says silicone dolls can last “many years” and gives no number. Both are sales claims. My math says silicone has to last 24 months on the same body, or 38 months against a $999 TPE doll, to win on cost per month.
Which is lighter, a silicone or TPE sex doll?
Neither, reliably. Skeleton, core and body shape decide the weight more than the skin. In both pairs I compared, the silicone one listed lighter: 97 lb vs 119 lb on one Starpery body, and 75 lb vs 86 lb on two 5’3” dolls. Check the weight on the specific listing, never the material, before you decide you can carry it.
Can TPE sex dolls be sanitized?
No. TPE is porous, so it can be cleaned but not sanitized, according to Bedsider’s sex toy cleaning guide. Silicone and other non-porous materials can be both. That’s why I tell guys never to share a TPE doll or buy a used one. Wash it after every use, and take any health worry to a doctor.
Buy the cheap one first. The silicone will still be for sale once you know you’re staying.
Cheers, Craig
