What Is a Sex Doll? The Body, the Skin, the Bones and the Price

Heads up, I make a few bucks if you buy through my links. It doesn't change your price or what I tell you. How that works.

What is a sex doll? It’s a solid, human-shaped sex toy: either a whole female body or just the part of one you have sex with. The skin is TPE or silicone, full-size dolls have a metal skeleton inside so you can pose them, and going by current listings they run from $6.99 for a throwaway handheld to $6,000 for a premium silicone doll.

That’s the short answer. The longer one comes down to what I call body, skin and bones: how much body you’re getting, what the skin is made of and what’s holding it up. Get those right and the price makes sense.

When my buddy Dev asked me what is a sex doll, anyway, he figured they were all blow-up dolls with a surprised face. Those exist, and they’re a different, cheaper product. I don’t cover them here. This page is about the solid ones.

What is a sex doll, in one sentence?

A sex doll is a solid, body-shaped sex toy, anything from a hip section to a full-size woman, made of soft TPE or silicone and built for penetrative sex. “Love doll” means the same thing. It’s the polite word shops use.

That definition covers a lot of ground, so I sort them by how much body you get. That’s the first thing to decide, way before the face.

The five types of sex dolls

There are five types, with the half-body counted under torso, and the type decides the price, the weight and where the thing lives in your apartment. Here’s how they stack up. Every number below comes from a listing I checked in October 2026. These are examples, not picks. Each type links to my full page on it.

Type What you get Example weight Example price (as of October 2026) Shipping
Full-size The whole body, head to feet 70.6 lb (32 kg) for a 5’2” TPE doll $599 on sale, listed regular $1,199 Free, US stock
Torso Chest to hips, no arms or legs 27.3 lb (12.4 kg) $399.99 at Tantaly Free in the US
Half-body (a torso with short legs) Chest, butt and 10.2 in (26 cm) legs, 32.7 in (83 cm) tall 68.3 lb (31 kg) $989.99 at Tantaly, which sells it as “full size” Free in the US, 3-5 business days
Butt Hips, ass and vagina, no upper body 24.3 lb (11 kg) $309.99 at Tantaly Free in the US
Handheld A stroker you hold in one hand, no body 1.37 oz for the egg, 17.1 oz for a reusable Tenga stroker $6.99 for a single-use Tenga egg, $109.99 for that reusable one US$10, free from US$84.99 in the mainland US
Head A swap head for a doll you already own Not on head-only listings. 4.4-5.5 lb (2-2.5 kg) on one full-size doll’s spec sheet $249 for a TPE head at SexDollPartner Free, US stock

That half-body row needs a word. Tantaly sells it as a “full size” doll, but it’s 32.7 in (83 cm) tall with 10.2 in legs. That’s a torso with short legs, not a whole body, so I file it under half-body and it lives on the torso page.

Watch the weight on it, though. At 68.3 lb it’s within a few pounds of the 5’2” full-size.

What are sex dolls made of?

Almost every solid doll is made of TPE, silicone, or both. TPE is cheaper and softer. Silicone costs more and isn’t porous. Know which one you’re buying before you hit buy.

TPE: soft, cheap, porous

TPE is thermoplastic elastomer, a soft rubbery plastic. The Tantaly listings in the table say their dolls use “medical-grade TPE”, and the $599 full-size is listed as full TPE.

The downside is that TPE is porous. Healthline lists thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) among the porous sex toy materials. Porous means bacteria can get into the surface, so you clean it carefully every time. Health questions go to your doctor, not a doll site.

TPE also gets oily. The oil that keeps it soft isn’t chemically bonded and migrates to the surface, and heat speeds that up. That’s why a TPE doll can get sticky.

Silicone: firmer, pricier, non-porous

Silicone is the premium skin. A sex toy safety guide on the Simcoe Muskoka health unit’s site says silicone’s surface is non-porous, so bacteria and viruses don’t get trapped, and that it costs more than most other toy materials.

The same guide says not to use silicone lube on silicone toys. Use water-based lube on a silicone doll.

RealDoll, the American premium brand, sells what it calls premium silicone intimacy devices, handcrafted in the USA. That’s the top of the market.

Hybrid: TPE body, silicone head

A hybrid splits the difference. One listing I checked, Climax’s 157 cm (5’2”) Sola, pairs a TPE body with a silicone head. The whole doll is 38 kg (83.8 lb) net.

If you’re stuck between the two, my TPE vs silicone comparison goes through feel, cleaning and how long each one lasts.

What’s inside: the sex doll skeleton

Full-size dolls have a metal skeleton under the skin, with joints that let you pose them. You can’t see it, but it decides how she sits and whether she stands.

SexDollPartner’s listings spell out the cheap and expensive ends:

  • Basic skeleton: “only a few movable joints”, “somewhat difficult to pose”, but cheaper.
  • EVO skeleton: also called an articulated or geared skeleton, with “additional movable joints in the lower body”. It’s the most expensive skeleton option on that store.

The same listing warns that the neck joint can’t be washed, or it “will easily cause metal rust”. Keep the neck dry when you wash her.

Two common add-ons, going by Starpery’s FAQ:

  • Standing feet: Starpery inserts 3 bolts under the sole so the doll can stand and hold a pose.
  • Shrugging shoulders: a different built-in skeleton that Starpery says is more flexible than its normal model.

Starpery also builds a foam core around the skeleton on its newer bodies, with the skeleton, foam core and mould “integrated into one piece”. That’s how makers are cutting weight.

Torsos and butt dolls are a different story. The Tantaly listings I checked don’t say whether they have any frame inside, so I’m not going to tell you they do. More on frames, joints and what breaks in my notes on the sex doll skeleton.

How do sex dolls work?

There’s nothing to switch on. You use the vagina like you’d expect, with a lube that suits the material. Full-size dolls have more to work with, but the idea’s the same.

The basic doll is just skin and bones. Use it, clean it, dry it and put it away.

What a sex doll actually costs

Going by the listings above, a handheld starts at $6.99, a butt doll around $310, a torso around $400, a TPE full-size around $600 on sale, and a premium silicone doll near $6,000. All prices as of October 2026. That $6.99 egg is single-use, so the cheapest one you keep is more like the $109.99 stroker. The other TPE full-size I checked was $799 on sale. RealDoll’s Classic line lists at $5,999.99 per model.

That’s a huge range for “a sex doll”. It’s why I keep saying pick the type first.

Watch the sticker price on the full-size. That $599 doll lists a regular price of $1,199. I treat a crossed-out price like listing copy: bullshit until I see someone actually charged it. Compare the number you’d pay. Shipping and duty can add a lot on top, which I break down in what a doll costs once it lands.

What fits a small apartment

If you’re in a one-bedroom or a basement unit, a torso or butt doll is the easy answer. At 24 to 27 lb, you can carry one in your arms. A full-size at 70-plus lb needs floor space and a strong back. If even a butt doll is too much, a handheld goes in a drawer. My rundown of butt dolls by weight has the lighter ones.

Where I draw the line

Every doll on this site is a clearly adult woman. Petite is fine. Dolls made to look like they’re under age are not cool, at all, and Canada treats it as child pornography: CBC reported that the border agency seized at least 42 childlike dolls as child pornography between 2016 and 2018. You won’t find one here, and I won’t link to any store section that sells them.

The mistake most guys make

They pick a face from the photos before they ask what the doll is made of. Then a 70 lb TPE doll with a basic skeleton shows up, and that’s a shitty surprise when they wanted something they could carry and pose. The face is the last thing to choose.

Go in this order: type, then skin, then skeleton, then price, then face. If you’re not sure you’re even into it, start with a torso. It’s cheaper and lighter than a full-size, and the damn thing won’t wreck your back. I’d take it over a butt doll for a first buy because you get the chest too, for about $90 more going by the table.

FAQs

What are sex dolls made of?

Solid sex dolls are TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), silicone, or a hybrid of the two. Full-size models have a metal skeleton under the skin. TPE is the cheap, soft one, and it’s porous, so it takes more careful cleaning. Silicone is firmer and pricier, with a non-porous surface. Blow-up dolls are a separate inflatable product, and I don’t cover them.

How do sex dolls work?

There’s no motor and nothing to plug in. You use the vagina with a lube that matches the skin: water-based for silicone, because a public health guide on toy materials says no silicone lube on silicone toys. On a full-size doll, you set her position by bending the metal joints. Afterwards you wash, dry and put her away.

What is a sex doll used for?

Sex, plain and simple. Some guys want a whole body to hold and pose, others only want the main event. That’s why the market sells everything from a 24 lb butt doll to a 70-plus lb full-size. Pick by what you’ll actually use and can carry, not by what looks best in a photo. “Love doll” is just the polite name for the same thing.

What is a RealDoll?

RealDoll is a brand, not a type. It’s an American maker of premium silicone dolls, and its Classic models list at $5,999.99 as of October 2026. That’s the top of the market. Some guys say “real doll” to mean any realistic sex doll, but the name belongs to that one company.

And if your mom asks what’s in the closet, it’s a home gym.

Cheers, Craig
