Sex Doll Customs in Canada: Duty, GST/HST and the Ship-From Rule

On this page
Sex doll customs in Canada come down to where the box ships from. A courier shipment from the US or Mexico is duty-free up to C$150 and tax-free up to C$40. Courier from any other country, or anything by mail, gets only C$20 of room on both. Nearly every doll costs more than all three, and tax-free ends at C$40 even when duty-free goes to C$150.
So you’re paying GST or HST at the border on basically any doll. The real questions are whether you owe duty on top, and who handles the paperwork.
Last updated October 2026. Thresholds are from CBSA Memorandum D8-2-16, dated November 15, 2024.
The ship-from rule: sex doll customs in Canada start here
The ship-from rule: your border bill is set by where the box leaves from and who carries it, not by where the store says it’s based. Tape it to your monitor.
Here are the limits, as of October 2026:
| How it arrives | Duty-free up to | Tax-free up to | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Courier, shipped from the US or Mexico | C$150 | C$40 | CBSA D8-2-16 |
| Courier, shipped from any other country | C$20 | C$20 | CBSA D8-2-16 |
| Mail (Canada Post), from anywhere | C$20 | C$20 | CBSA mail and courier page |
A few details in CBSA’s D8-2-16 memo matter for doll buyers.
The doll doesn’t have to be made in the US. CBSA says goods qualify for the higher US limits if they shipped from the US or Mexico and “entered into the commerce” there first. A doll sitting in a US warehouse counts.
Passing through the US doesn’t count. A box that’s only transshipped through the States, without entering US commerce, drops to the C$20 limit.
Go over a limit and you pay on the whole thing. Duty applies to the entire value, not just the part above C$150. And splitting one order into smaller boxes to sneak under the line isn’t allowed.
A $300 butt doll is already well over C$150, so in practice the table tells you one thing. Tax is coming. Whether duty comes with it depends on the ship-from rule and on the doll itself.
What you’ll actually pay: GST/HST, duty and the courier’s cut
Expect three charges on an imported doll: sales tax, possibly duty, and a fee for whoever clears it through customs. Only the first one is certain.
Sales tax
CBSA collects GST, plus PST or HST based on the province you live in, not the province the box enters through. Here are the rates the CRA lists as of October 2026:
| Province | Tax |
|---|---|
| Ontario | 13% HST |
| Nova Scotia | 14% HST (down from 15% on April 1, 2025) |
| New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI | 15% HST |
| Alberta, the territories | 5% GST |
| BC, Manitoba | 5% GST + 7% PST |
| Saskatchewan | 5% GST + 6% PST |
| Quebec | 5% GST + 9.975% QST |
Quick example, my math. Value for duty is the dollar figure customs taxes you on. Say it works out to C$1,000. In Ontario that’s C$130 in HST at the door, before any duty or fees. In Alberta it’s C$50. Same doll, a C$80 difference just from your postal code.
Duty
I’m not going to give you a sex doll duty rate for Canada, because I couldn’t find one from an official source that I’d stake my name on. A wrong rate is worse than no rate.
Here’s what is solid. Canada Post says there’s generally no customs duty on products that qualify under CUSMA, the Canada-US-Mexico trade deal. CUSMA is about where the doll was made, which is a different question from where it shipped. So ask the seller where it was built. If the answer is outside North America, budget for duty on top of tax and get the seller’s quote in writing.
Brokerage and handling fees
This is the charge that catches guys off guard. When a courier clears the doll for you, CBSA says it can charge you customs clearance fees that are “separate and distinct” from duties and taxes. CBSA doesn’t set them and tells you to confirm them with the courier yourself.
That same CBSA page says you don’t have to use the courier’s broker. You can self-account instead:
- Tell the courier ahead of time, or refuse delivery when it shows up.
- Take the tracking number, your receipt and ID to a CBSA office that handles public accounting.
- Pay the duty and tax there and get an official receipt.
- Show the courier the receipt and book the delivery.
It’s more running around, but CBSA says it can save you some admin fees. A surprise fee on a $2,000 doll is a hell of a way to start the week.
By mail it’s simpler. As of October 2026, Canada Post’s customs page says it charges a C$9.95 handling fee per dutiable or taxable mail item, and you can pay online through tracking.

One buyer’s border bill, and where it gets fuzzy
The clearest Canadian import bill I found on Reddit is one buyer’s 2024 order, and the duty plus HST caught him off guard. It’s one dated story about toys, not dolls, and not a rate you should plan around.
In January 2024, u/b0yst0ys laid out his costs on three big silicone toys from a UK shop. He paid about CAD $146 in duty plus HST on a £418.80 sale order with £34.50 shipping, plus what he guessed was a CAD $10 broker fee. His words: “I, uh, was not expecting the massive HST and Duty charge…”
Here’s what holds up and what doesn’t:
- The 13% HST in his math matches Ontario’s rate in the CRA table above, though he doesn’t say where he lives.
- The 6.5% duty came from his own read of a tariff code for plastic goods. It’s not a CBSA ruling, and I’m not passing it off as a doll rate.
- He says duty and HST hit the full value. For duty, that matches CBSA’s whole-value rule above. His box came from the UK, so it only had the C$20 limit to begin with.
- The fee is where people disagree. He guessed a broker. A commenter, u/Spunshine_Valley, figured “The 10 dollar fee is for the privilege of them opening your package lol (thanks guys)”. It came by Canada Post, so the handling fee covered above is one possible match. That C$9.95 is today’s figure, and I can’t tell what it was in January 2024.
My take: his toys were never going to slip under C$20, and no doll will either. Price the HST on the full order before you pay, and treat any duty number from a forum as one guy’s guess.
Why a full-size doll won’t come by Canada Post
A full-size doll in its box is heavier than Canada Post will carry, so it’s going to show up by courier or freight. Canada Post caps parcels at 30 kg (66 lb).
Going by the listings in my guide to doll weights, a full-size between 5’2” and 5’8” weighs 71 to 106 lb (32 to 48 kg) before the box. That’s over the cap before anybody adds packing.
In my read, that means a full-size almost always comes with a courier’s customs clearance, and whatever the courier charges for it. Smaller dolls can fit. In that same guide, the lightest torso listing is 35.9 lb (16.3 kg) boxed and a butt doll is 30.9 lb (14 kg) boxed. A heavier torso is 73.4 lb (33.3 kg) boxed, so check the boxed weight on the listing before you count on mail.
In a small apartment, a light torso is the easy one. It can come by mail with a flat handling fee, if the seller uses the post, and it fits in a closet when it gets there.
The courier always seems to call during the Leafs game. Keep your phone on anyway.
Why does CBSA seize some dolls?
CBSA seizes dolls that look like children, because Canadian law treats them as child pornography. There’s no grey area here, and no paperwork fix.
In a 2018 report, records obtained by CBC showed CBSA intercepted at least 42 child-like dolls between January 2016 and August 2018, seizing them as illegal child pornography. The documents said officers classified them that way because the dolls were small in stature and had underdeveloped breasts. CBSA told CBC that seized dolls are turned over to the RCMP or another police force. That’s old data, not a current count, but the rule hasn’t moved.
Hamilton was one of the cities in that report, and it’s come up again since. In October 2024, CBSA officers in Hamilton checking international courier shipments found a child sex doll headed to Nova Scotia. The man who ordered it was charged with possessing, importing and smuggling child pornography. Hamilton is my hometown, so this one hits close.
Where I stand: petite is fine. A grown woman who’s 4’11” is a grown woman, and my petite doll picks all have adult faces and adult bodies. Dolls made to look like they’re under age are not cool, at all. I won’t link them, I won’t review them, and I’m not sending you anywhere near the stores that push them. For the rest of the legal picture, see what the law says about owning a doll.
The mistake most guys make
They assume a store with a .ca address ships from Canada. CBSA’s own page on importing by courier warns about exactly this. It says a “.ca” web address doesn’t mean the goods are in Canada, and an order can come from another country with duty, tax and admin fees attached.
A maple leaf in the logo doesn’t move the warehouse. That’s how a “free shipping” deal turns into a courier at your door asking for money before he’ll hand over the box. It’s all legal, and it’s still bullshit when nobody warned you.
So before you hit buy, ask the seller two things and get the answers in writing:
- Where exactly does this ship from?
- Who pays duty, tax and brokerage, you or me?
If they can’t answer either one, shop somewhere else. In my book, a seller who dodges that question isn’t going to be easier to deal with on a damn refund. If you’re in the States, my US sex doll tariff guide covers your side of the border.
FAQs
Are sex dolls legal in Canada?
Adult dolls aren’t banned in Canada, as far as I can find. Every seizure and charge I found was about a doll that resembles a child. CBSA seizes those as child pornography, according to CBC’s reporting, and people have been charged with importing them. If a doll looks under age in any way, skip it. That’s the law and it’s my rule too.
How are sex dolls shipped to Canada?
By courier or freight for anything big, and sometimes by mail for small ones. Canada Post caps parcels at 30 kg (66 lb), and a typical full-size doll weighs more than that on its own. The carrier matters because courier shipments from the US get higher duty and tax limits than mail does, and couriers can charge their own clearance fees.
Do I pay duty and tax on a sex doll shipped from the US?
You’ll pay GST or HST, because every doll is over the C$40 tax-free limit. Duty is free up to C$150 by courier from the US, and above that it applies to the whole value unless the doll qualifies under CUSMA. As of October 2026, those are CBSA’s numbers. Ask the seller where the doll was made.
Can I avoid the courier’s brokerage fee?
Sometimes. CBSA lets you self-account: tell the courier first or refuse delivery, then pay the duty and tax yourself at a CBSA office that offers public accounting, and show the courier your receipt. CBSA says it may save some admin fees. Or buy from a seller who prepays duty and tax, so there’s nothing left to clear.
Ask where it ships from before you ask what it costs.
Cheers, Craig
